Asmir Begović, born on June 20, 1987, is a distinguished Bosnian professional footballer renowned for his role as a goalkeeper at EFL Championship club Leicester City. His football journey commenced at Portsmouth, where he signed in the summer of 2003. After a series of loan spells, he made his Premier League debut in May 2009, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.
In February 2010, Begović transferred to Stoke City for a fee of three million two hundred fifty thousand pounds. His tenure at Stoke was highlighted during the 2012–13 season when he played every league match and earned the club's Player of the Year award. A memorable moment in his career came in November 2013 when he became the fifth goalkeeper in Premier League history to score a goal, achieving this feat from an astonishing distance of ninety-seven point five yards against Southampton, which also set the world record for the longest goal scored in football.
In July 2015, Begović joined Premier League champions Chelsea for a transfer fee of eight million pounds, where he served as the second-choice goalkeeper before moving to AFC Bournemouth two years later. Following a challenging period where he lost his starting position to Artur Boruc in early 2019, he was loaned to Qarabağ and A.C. Milan before eventually signing with Everton.
On the international stage, Begović initially represented Canada at the youth level, participating in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. However, in 2009, he made the pivotal decision to switch his allegiance to Bosnia and Herzegovina. He quickly established himself as the national team's first-choice goalkeeper, playing a crucial role in their qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, marking the country's first appearance in a major tournament.
