Asser

Asser, a distinguished Welsh monk hailing from St David's in Dyfed, made significant contributions to the historical landscape of England during the late ninth century. In the 890s, he ascended to the role of Bishop of Sherborne, a position that allowed him to influence both ecclesiastical and secular matters of the time.

His journey took a pivotal turn around the year eight hundred eighty-five when he was summoned by Alfred the Great to join a circle of learned men at the royal court. After a brief period of illness that led him to Caerwent, Asser accepted the invitation, marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the king.

In the year eight hundred ninety-three, Asser penned a biography titled the Life of King Alfred, which has become a crucial source of information about the life and reign of Alfred. Although the original manuscript was lost in a fire in seventeen thirty-one, earlier transcriptions and references by subsequent writers have allowed for a reconstruction of this important work.

Asser's influence extended beyond biography; he assisted Alfred in translating Gregory the Great's Pastoral Care and possibly contributed to other literary works. Despite some historical debates regarding the authenticity of his writings, Asser's Life is now widely regarded as a genuine account, providing invaluable insights into the era.
