Athanagild

Athanagild, a prominent figure in the history of the Visigoths, rose to power as the king of Hispania and Septimania after a significant rebellion against his predecessor, Agila I, in the year five hundred fifty-one. This bold move marked the beginning of a tumultuous period in Visigothic history, culminating in a decisive confrontation at Seville, where Agila faced a second defeat.

Following Agila's death in five hundred fifty-four, Athanagild became the sole ruler, a position he maintained for the remainder of his reign. His leadership was characterized by the challenges of consolidating power and navigating the complexities of Visigothic politics during a time of transition.

Historian Roger Collins has noted that Athanagild's reign may hold greater significance than the historical sources suggest. The accounts of Isidore of Seville, while valuable, may reflect the biases of later Visigothic kings who viewed Athanagild and his descendants with hostility.
