Athenaeus

Athenaeus was a prominent ancient Greek rhetorician and grammarian who thrived during the late second and early third centuries AD. His life coincided with the reign of Marcus Aurelius, and while the Suda notes his existence during this time, his critical remarks about Commodus, who passed away in one hundred ninety-two, suggest that he lived beyond that emperor's rule.

As a contemporary of Adrantus, Athenaeus contributed significantly to the literary landscape of his era. He claimed authorship of a treatise on the thratta, a fish referenced by Archippus and other comic poets, as well as a history of the Syrian kings. Unfortunately, both of these works have been lost to time.

Among his writings, the fifteen-volume Deipnosophistae remains the most notable, providing a glimpse into his intellectual pursuits and the cultural milieu of his time. This work, which explores the art of dining and conversation, showcases Athenaeus's skill as a writer and orator, solidifying his legacy in the annals of ancient literature.
