August Derleth

August Derleth, born on February twenty-fourth, nineteen oh nine, was a multifaceted American writer and anthologist whose influence spanned various literary genres. He is best known for being the first book publisher of H. P. Lovecraft's writings, significantly contributing to the Cthulhu Mythos and the cosmic horror genre. His efforts in founding Arkham House played a crucial role in introducing hardcover editions of supernatural fiction from the United Kingdom to American audiences.

In addition to his work in horror, Derleth was a prolific writer in several other genres, including historical fiction, poetry, detective fiction, science fiction, and biography. He created the character Solar Pons, a clever pastiche of Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic detective Sherlock Holmes, showcasing his versatility and creativity.

Derleth was recognized as a leading regional writer of his time and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in nineteen thirty-eight. He regarded his most significant work to be the ambitious Sac Prairie Saga, a collection of fiction, historical narratives, poetry, and non-fiction that aimed to capture and memorialize the essence of life in Wisconsin, a place he cherished deeply.
