August Kopff

August Kopff, born on February fifth, eighteen eighty-two, was a prominent German astronomer renowned for his significant contributions to the field of astronomy. He dedicated much of his academic career to the study of celestial bodies, earning his PhD from the University of Heidelberg in nineteen oh six.

Following his doctoral studies, Kopff took on a pivotal role at the Humboldt University of Berlin, where he served as the Director of the Institute for Astronomical Calculation. His leadership and expertise facilitated groundbreaking research in the discovery of comets and asteroids.

Among his notable discoveries are the periodic comet 22P/Kopff and the non-periodic comet C/1906 E1. Additionally, he made significant contributions to asteroid research, including the identification of the Trojan asteroids 617 Patroclus and 624 Hektor, which are of great interest in the study of our solar system.

In recognition of his contributions to astronomy, the lunar crater Kopff and the asteroid 1631 Kopff were named in his honor. Furthermore, the minor planet 805 Hormuthia commemorates his wife, Hormuth, highlighting the personal connections that often accompany scientific achievement.
