Auguste Barbier

Auguste Barbier, born on April twenty-ninth, eighteen oh five, in Paris, France, was a notable French poet, translator, playwright, writer, and librettist. His literary career was profoundly influenced by the fervor of the July Revolution, which ignited his passion for crafting a series of dynamic and impassioned poems that boldly criticized the societal ills of his time.

Among his most recognized works is the collection known as Iambes, published in eighteen thirty-one. Although the title may not strictly apply to all his writings, it encapsulates the essence of his poetic style, which drew inspiration from the verses of André Chénier. Notable pieces within this collection include La Curée, La Popularité, L'Idole, Paris, Dante, Quatre-vingt-treize, and Varsovie, each reflecting the tumultuous spirit of the era.

Despite his contributions, many of Barbier's poems have faded into obscurity. His long-awaited recognition came in eighteen sixty-nine when he was admitted to the Académie française. However, this honor was met with a somewhat dismissive remark from Montalembert, who quipped, 'Barbier? mais il est mort!' Barbier ultimately passed away in Nice in eighteen eighty-two, leaving behind a legacy that, while not universally celebrated, marked a significant chapter in French literature.

In addition to his poetry, Barbier collaborated with Léon de Wailly on the libretto for Berlioz's opera Benvenuto Cellini. His literary oeuvre also includes two series of poems addressing the political and social upheavals in Italy and England, which were later included in revised editions of Iambes et poèmes.
