Augustus Addison Gould

Augustus Addison Gould, born on April twenty-third, eighteen oh five, was a distinguished American physician and naturalist, renowned for his contributions to the field of conchology. His expertise in the study of mollusks positioned him as the foremost conchologist of his time, a title he earned through his meticulous research and dedication to the natural sciences.

Throughout his illustrious career, Gould described over one thousand one hundred new species of mollusks. His extensive work included documenting all known mollusks of Massachusetts, as well as the shells collected during two significant government exploring expeditions. His findings not only enriched scientific knowledge but also provided a comprehensive understanding of the diversity of mollusks in North America.
