Augustus John

Augustus John, born on January fourth, eighteen seventy-eight, was a prominent Welsh painter, draughtsman, and etcher. His artistic prowess earned him a significant place in the British art scene, where he was once regarded as the most important artist of his time. Virginia Woolf notably remarked in nineteen oh eight that the era dominated by John Singer Sargent and Charles Wellington Furse had come to an end, heralding the dawn of Augustus John's age.

Throughout the early twentieth century, John's influence was profound, with Percy Wyndham Lewis describing the decade leading up to nineteen fourteen as the 'Augustan decade.'
