Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Augustus Stephen Vogt

Augustus Stephen Vogt, born on August fourteenth, eighteen sixty-one, in Washington, Oxford County, Canada West, was a prominent figure in the world of music. His father, John George Vogt, a German Roman Catholic, emigrated to Canada to escape the revolutions of eighteen forty-eight and was a hotel-keeper and organ builder. His mother, Marianna Zingg, hailed from Switzerland and immigrated to Canada in the 1830s. Growing up in Elmira, Ontario, Vogt was immersed in a musical environment from an early age.

Vogt's musical journey began as he was appointed organist at the local church, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors. He further honed his skills by studying at the New England Conservatory of Music from eighteen eighty-one to eighteen eighty-four, followed by a period at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany from eighteen eighty-five to eighteen eighty-eight. Upon returning to Canada, he took on the role of organist-choirmaster at the Jarvis Street Baptist Church in Toronto, a position he held until nineteen oh six.

In addition to his church duties, Vogt was a dedicated music educator, teaching at both the Toronto College of Music and the Toronto Conservatory of Music. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Organists and had a significant impact on the next generation of musicians, with notable pupils including W. H. Hewlett and Ernest Seitz. In eighteen ninety-four, he founded the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, which became a cornerstone of the city's musical landscape.

Vogt's career continued to flourish, and in nineteen thirteen, he was appointed musical director of the Toronto Conservatory of Music. However, he faced health challenges, suffering from heart problems starting in nineteen eighteen, yet he persevered in his demanding career. Tragically, he passed away on September seventeenth, nineteen twenty-six, from a heart attack while battling influenza, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of music.
