Aurelius Victor

Aurelius Victor, a prominent historian and poet of the Roman Empire, was born in the year three hundred twenty to a humble family in North Africa. His father, uneducated, could not provide the means for a privileged upbringing, yet Victor's thirst for knowledge led him to pursue education first in Carthage and later in Rome. This foundation would serve him well as he embarked on a remarkable career.

Victor's most notable work, De Caesaribus, is a concise epitome of his extensive history of imperial Rome, originally titled Aurelii Victoris Historiae Abbreviatae. This monumental history, which spanned from Augustus to Constantius II, was composed between the years three hundred fifty-eight and three hundred sixty and published in three hundred sixty-one. His reputation soared following its release, culminating in the emperor Julian erecting a bronze statue in his honor in Naissus.

In addition to his literary contributions, Victor held significant political positions within the Roman Empire. Under the reign of Julian from three hundred sixty-one to three hundred sixty-three, he served as the governor of Pannonia Secunda. His political career continued to flourish as he became the urban prefect of Rome in three hundred eighty-eight or three hundred eighty-nine, appointed by the anti-pagan emperor Theodosius I. It is believed that he also attained the consulship in three hundred sixty-nine and served as suffect consul between three hundred seventy and three hundred seventy-eight.

Victor's life spanned a tumultuous period in Roman history, witnessing the transition from paganism to Christianity. He survived the death of Julian and navigated the challenges posed by Theodosius I's reign, which was marked by a fierce opposition to pagan beliefs. Despite these challenges, Aurelius Victor's legacy as a historian and politician endures, reflecting the complexities of his time.
