Austin-Emile Burke

Austin-Emile Burke, born on January 22, 1922, in Sluice Point, Nova Scotia, was a distinguished Canadian prelate of the Catholic Church. His journey in the clergy began when he was ordained a priest on March 25, 1950, marking the start of a lifelong commitment to his faith and community.

On February 1, 1968, Burke was appointed as the bishop of the Diocese of Yarmouth, a role he embraced with dedication. His consecration took place on May 14, 1968, solidifying his position within the Church and allowing him to serve his congregation with passion and purpose.

Burke's leadership qualities were recognized when he was appointed archbishop of the Archdiocese of Halifax on July 8, 1991. He was officially installed on September 19, 1991, taking on the responsibilities of guiding a larger community of believers.

After nearly three decades of service, Austin-Emile Burke retired on January 13, 1998, leaving behind a legacy of faith and commitment to the Catholic Church.
