Avijit Roy, born on September twelfth, nineteen seventy-two, was a prominent Bangladeshi-American writer, blogger, and activist. He was also a skilled biomedical and mechanical engineer, whose diverse expertise contributed to his multifaceted career. Roy was best known for founding and managing Mukto-Mona, an influential online community that served as a platform for Bangladeshi freethinkers, rationalists, skeptics, atheists, and humanists.
As a staunch advocate for free expression in Bangladesh, Roy played a pivotal role in coordinating international protests against government censorship and the imprisonment of atheist bloggers. His commitment to promoting rational discourse and human rights made him a significant figure in the fight for freedom of speech in his home country.
Tragically, Avijit Roy's life was cut short when he was brutally murdered by machete-wielding assailants in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on February twenty-sixth, two thousand fifteen. The attack was claimed by the Islamic militant organization Ansarullah Bangla Team, highlighting the dangers faced by those who challenge extremist ideologies.
