Ayman al-Zawahiri, born on June nineteenth, nineteen fifty-one, was an Egyptian-born pan-Islamist militant and physician who rose to prominence as the second general emir of al-Qaeda. His leadership spanned from June two thousand eleven until his death in July two thousand twenty-two. Al-Zawahiri is perhaps best known for his pivotal role in orchestrating the September eleventh attacks, a defining moment in global terrorism.
Graduating from Cairo University with a degree in medicine and a master's in surgery, al-Zawahiri initially practiced as a surgeon. His journey into militancy began with the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, where he became a leading figure and eventually attained the rank of emir. His political activism led to imprisonment from nineteen eighty-one to nineteen eighty-four for his involvement in the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat.
