Azai Nagamasa

Azai Nagamasa, born on August twenty-eighth, fifteen forty-five, was a prominent Japanese daimyō during the tumultuous Sengoku period. He was the head of the Azai clan, which was based at Odani Castle in northern Ōmi Province. Nagamasa's political alliances were significant, particularly his marriage to Oichi, the sister of the powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga, in fifteen sixty-four. This union produced three daughters—Yodo-dono, Ohatsu, and Oeyo—who would later become influential figures in their own right.

Despite his familial ties to Nobunaga, Nagamasa's allegiance shifted, leading him to become one of Nobunaga's adversaries by fifteen seventy. This conflict was largely fueled by the Azai clan's alliance with the Asakura clan, which set the stage for a series of confrontations. Notably, Nagamasa fought against Nobunaga at the significant Battle of Anegawa, marking a pivotal moment in their rivalry.

The culmination of this conflict came in August fifteen seventy-three, when Nagamasa's forces were ultimately defeated by Nobunaga. As the siege of Odani Castle unfolded, Nagamasa chose to commit seppuku, a traditional form of ritual suicide, rather than face capture. His death marked the end of the Azai clan's prominence and a significant moment in the power struggles of the Sengoku period.
