Azar Nafisi

Azar Nafisi, an Iranian-American writer and professor of English literature, was born in Tehran, Iran, in nineteen forty-eight. She has made the United States her home since nineteen ninety-seven and proudly became a U.S. citizen in two thousand eight. Nafisi's literary journey is deeply intertwined with her rich cultural heritage and her experiences as a woman in a changing world.

Throughout her career, Nafisi has taken on several prominent academic roles, including serving as the director of the Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Dialogue Project and Cultural Conversations. She has also held the position of Centennial Fellow at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service and has been a fellow at Oxford University, showcasing her commitment to education and cultural dialogue.

Best known for her acclaimed memoir, Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, published in two thousand three, Nafisi's work has resonated with readers worldwide, remaining on The New York Times Best Seller list for an impressive one hundred seventeen weeks. Her literary contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the two thousand four Non-fiction Book of the Year Award from Booksense.

In addition to her memoir, Nafisi has penned several other notable works, including Things I've Been Silent About: Memories of a Prodigal Daughter, The Republic of Imagination: America in Three Books, and That Other World: Nabokov and the Puzzle of Exile. Her latest book, Read Dangerously: The Subversive Power of Literature in Troubled Times, was released on March eighth, two thousand twenty-two.

In two thousand twenty-four, Nafisi's influential memoir was adapted into a film directed by Eran Riklis, with the talented Golshifteh Farahani portraying her character. The film also features notable actors such as Zar Amir Ebrahimi and Mina Kavani, further extending Nafisi's impact on contemporary culture.
