Aziz Sancar

Aziz Sancar, born on September eighth, nineteen forty-six, is a distinguished Turkish-American molecular biologist renowned for his groundbreaking work in DNA repair mechanisms, cell cycle checkpoints, and the circadian clock. His research has significantly advanced our understanding of photolyase and nucleotide excision repair in bacteria, reshaping the landscape of molecular biology.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field, Sancar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in two thousand fifteen, sharing this prestigious honor with Tomas Lindahl and Paul L. Modrich for their mechanistic studies of DNA repair. This accolade underscores his pivotal role in elucidating the complexities of genetic repair processes.

Currently, Sancar holds the esteemed position of Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
