B. B. Comer

B. B. Comer, born on November 7, 1848, was a prominent American politician who made significant contributions to the state of Alabama. He served as the 33rd governor from 1907 to 1911, during which he implemented several key reforms aimed at enhancing the state's economic competitiveness. His administration focused on railroad regulation and the reduction of business rates, which helped to attract more businesses to Alabama.

In addition to his economic initiatives, Comer was a strong advocate for education. He increased funding for the public school system, leading to the establishment of more rural schools and high schools across the state. This commitment to education played a crucial role in improving the literacy rate among the population, particularly for white students in Alabama.

Before entering politics, Comer was a successful planter and businessman. He inherited a vast thirty thousand-acre plantation that primarily produced corn and cotton. His entrepreneurial spirit extended to the mining industry, where he had interests in the Eureka Mines near Birmingham. In 1897, he invested ten thousand dollars with the Trainer family to develop textile mills in Alabama, further showcasing his dedication to the state's economic growth.

Comer's business acumen led him to become the president of Avondale Mills, a position he held until his passing in 1927. His legacy as a politician and businessman continues to influence Alabama's development and growth.
