Baaba Maal

Baaba Maal, born on November twelfth, nineteen fifty-three, in Podor along the Senegal River, is a celebrated Senegalese singer and guitarist. His musical journey is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Pulaar-speaking people, who inhabit the regions surrounding the Senegal River, particularly in the historic kingdom of Futa Tooro.

In addition to his soulful singing, Maal showcases his versatility by playing acoustic guitar and percussion, enriching his performances with a unique blend of sounds. Over the years, he has released numerous albums, collaborating with both independent and major labels, which have contributed to his international acclaim.

In July two thousand three, Baaba Maal was honored with the title of UNDP Youth Emissary, a testament to his influence and commitment to youth empowerment. Through his music, he not only entertains but also promotes the rich cultural heritage of his people, ensuring that the traditions of the Pulaar community continue to resonate with audiences around the world.
