Baba Tahir

Baba Tahir, an enigmatic figure of the 11th century, was a dervish poet hailing from Hamadan, Iran. He lived during the reign of Tugril of the Seljuk dynasty, a period marked by cultural and political transformation. Despite the passage of time, much about his life remains shrouded in mystery, contributing to his legendary status.

The prefix 'Baba,' meaning 'The Wise' or 'The Respected,' is commonly associated with him in historical texts. However, his nickname 'Oryan,' translating to 'The Naked,' emerged only in the seventeenth century. This moniker likely reflects his spiritual and ascetic lifestyle, suggesting that he was a wandering dervish, unencumbered by material possessions.

Baba Tahir's poetry is notable for its use of the Hamadani dialect of Persian, a linguistic choice that adds depth to his work. L. P. Elwell-Sutton posits that his verses are often categorized as Fahlaviyat, indicating a connection to Middle Persian. Meanwhile, linguist Rouben Abrahamian has identified a close relationship between Baba Tahir's dialect and that spoken by the Jewish community in Hamadan today.
