Babylas of Antioch

Babylas of Antioch, a revered presbyter and patriarch, served the Christian community in Antioch from two hundred thirty-seven to two hundred fifty-three. His leadership came during a tumultuous period marked by the Decian persecution, which ultimately led to his imprisonment and subsequent death.

Notably, Babylas holds the distinction of being the first saint recorded to have had his remains translated for religious purposes. This practice, which became increasingly common in later centuries, underscores his significance in the early Christian tradition.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholic Churches of the Byzantine rite, his feast day is celebrated on the fourth of September. Conversely, in the Roman Rite, it is observed on the twenty-fourth of January, reflecting his enduring legacy across different Christian denominations.
