Bagyidaw

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Bagyidaw

Bagyidaw, born on July 23, 1784, was the seventh king of the Konbaung dynasty of Burma, reigning from 1819 until his abdication in 1837. Known as the Prince of Sagaing, he was appointed crown prince by his grandfather, King Bodawpaya, in 1808. Upon Bodawpaya's death, Bagyidaw ascended to the throne and made significant changes, including relocating the capital from Amarapura back to Ava in 1823.

His reign was marked by the tumultuous First Anglo-Burmese War, which lasted from 1824 to 1826. This conflict initiated the decline of the Konbaung dynasty, as Bagyidaw inherited a vast empire with poorly defined borders alongside British India. Despite his efforts to quell British-supported uprisings in territories acquired by his grandfather, he struggled to manage cross-border incursions, ultimately leading to the war.

The war proved disastrous for Bagyidaw, culminating in a decisive British victory. He was compelled to cede all western territories acquired by his grandfather, including Tenasserim, and to pay a substantial indemnity of one million pounds sterling. This left Burma in a state of economic hardship for years. Despite his hopes for the return of Tenasserim, the British redrew borders in 1830, and by 1833, it became evident that none of the lost territories would be restored.

As the years passed, Bagyidaw became increasingly reclusive, with power shifting to his queen, Nanmadaw Me Nu, and her brother. In February 1837, his brother, Crown Prince Tharrawaddy, instigated a rebellion that forced Bagyidaw to abdicate in April of that year. Following his abdication, Tharrawaddy executed Queen Me Nu and her brother, while Bagyidaw lived out his remaining days in relative obscurity. He passed away in October 1846 at the age of sixty-two.
