Bahram V

Bahram V, the son of the Sasanian shah Yazdegerd I, was born in four hundred six and ascended to the throne after a tumultuous period marked by his father's assassination. Raised at the Lahkmid court in al-Hira, he returned to Ctesiphon with a Lakhmid army, quickly winning the support of the nobles and priests through a legendary trial where he faced two lions.

His reign, which lasted from four hundred twenty to four hundred thirty-eight, was characterized by relative peace, punctuated by brief conflicts with the Eastern Roman Empire and the Kidarites. Notably, during his rule, the Arsacid line in Armenia was replaced by a marzban, ushering in the Marzpanate period, a significant transformation in Armenian governance.

Bahram V is immortalized in Persian literature, featuring prominently in Ferdowsi's Shahnameh and as the central figure in Nizami Ganjavi's Haft Peykar, where he is depicted as a king with seven wives, each residing in her own palace. His legacy is further enriched by Amir Khusrau's Hasht-Behesht, which celebrates his life and reign.

Renowned for his benevolence, Bahram V is remembered for his cancellation of taxes and public debts during festive occasions, his patronage of musicians, and his passion for hunting. He was succeeded by his son Yazdegerd II, continuing the Sasanian legacy.
