Bako Sahakyan, born on August thirtieth, nineteen sixty, is a prominent Armenian politician and military personnel. He is best known for his role as the third president of the de facto-independent Republic of Artsakh, a position he held from two thousand seven until two thousand twenty. His tenure marked him as the longest-serving president in the history of Artsakh.
Sahakyan first ascended to the presidency on July nineteenth, two thousand seven, and demonstrated significant political support by being re-elected on July nineteenth, two thousand twelve, for a second five-year term, garnering approximately two-thirds of the votes. In two thousand seventeen, he was re-elected indirectly for a three-year term, succeeding Arkadi Ghukasyan, who had previously served two consecutive five-year terms.
On October third, two thousand twenty-three, Sahakyan was detained by Azerbaijan while in the territory of Artsakh. Since that date, he has been held in captivity in Baku, marking a significant and troubling chapter in his life and career.
