Bal Thackeray

Bal Keshav Thackeray, born on January twenty-third, nineteen twenty-six, was a prominent Indian cartoonist and politician who left an indelible mark on Maharashtra's political landscape. He is best known as the founder of the Shiv Sena, a right-wing Marathi regionalist and Hindu nationalist party that emerged as a significant force in the state, particularly in Mumbai.

Thackeray's journey began as a cartoonist with The Free Press Journal in Bombay, where he honed his skills before venturing into the political arena by establishing his own weekly publication, Marmik, in nineteen sixty. His political ideology was heavily influenced by his father, Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, a key figure in the Sanyukta Maharashtra movement, which sought to create a separate state for Marathi speakers. Through Marmik, Bal Thackeray voiced his concerns about the increasing presence of non-Marathis in Mumbai, rallying support for his cause.

In the late nineteen sixties and early nineteen seventies, Thackeray, alongside notable figures like Madhav Mehere, Babasaheb Purandare, and Madhav Deshpande, built the Shiv Sena into a formidable political entity. Their collective efforts ensured the party's stability and growth, transforming Mumbai into an economic powerhouse. Thackeray also founded the Marathi-language newspaper Saamana, further solidifying his influence in the region.

Following the riots of nineteen ninety-two and ninety-three, Thackeray adopted a Hindutva ideological stance, which shaped his party's direction. In nineteen ninety-nine, he faced a six-year ban from voting and contesting elections due to allegations of seeking votes based on religion. Despite multiple arrests and a brief imprisonment, he managed to evade significant legal consequences. Upon his passing on November seventeenth, two thousand twelve, Thackeray was honored with a state funeral, attended by numerous mourners, reflecting his profound impact on the political fabric of Maharashtra.
