Baldwin V of Jerusalem

Baldwin V of Jerusalem, born in the year one thousand one hundred seventy-seven, ascended to the throne as a co-king alongside his uncle, Baldwin IV, in the year one thousand one hundred eighty-three. This unique arrangement was necessitated by Baldwin IV's struggle with leprosy, which rendered him unable to father heirs. In a strategic move to ensure a smooth succession, Baldwin IV groomed various relatives, ultimately choosing his young nephew to share the crown.

During their joint reign, Baldwin IV sought to sideline the unpopular stepfather of Baldwin V, Guy of Lusignan, by having the child crowned as co-king. This decision was pivotal in the political landscape of Jerusalem, as it aimed to secure the kingdom's future amidst the challenges posed by external threats and internal strife.

Following the death of Baldwin IV in the year one thousand one hundred eighty-five, Baldwin V became the sole ruler of Jerusalem. His reign, however, was tragically short-lived, as he passed away in the year one thousand one hundred eighty-six under circumstances that remain unclear. His untimely death led to a significant shift in power, with Count Raymond III of Tripoli stepping in to govern on behalf of the young king.

After Baldwin V's death, his mother, Sibylla, took the reins of power, ultimately making Guy king. This transition marked a new chapter in the history of Jerusalem, as the kingdom navigated the complexities of leadership and succession in a turbulent era.
