Balian of Ibelin

Balian of Ibelin, also known as Barisan the Younger, was a prominent crusader noble in the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the twelfth century. Born around the year one thousand one hundred thirty-five, he rose to prominence as the Lord of Ibelin, a title he held from one thousand one hundred seventy until his death in one thousand one hundred ninety-three.

His most notable achievement came during the siege of Jerusalem in one thousand one hundred eighty-seven, where he played a crucial role in the defense of the city. Despite the valiant efforts of his forces, Balian ultimately made the difficult decision to surrender Jerusalem to the formidable Saladin on the second of October in the same year.

Balian's legacy is marked by his leadership and the challenges he faced during a tumultuous period in history. His actions not only shaped the fate of Jerusalem but also left an indelible mark on the narrative of the Crusades.
