Balthild of Chelles

Balthild of Chelles, known in Old English as Bealdhild, meaning 'bold sword' or 'bold spear', was a remarkable figure in the history of Neustria and Burgundy. Born in six hundred twenty-six, she rose to prominence as the queen consort of Clovis II, who ruled from six hundred thirty-nine to six hundred fifty-eight. Her marriage to Clovis II not only solidified her status but also positioned her as a key player in the political landscape of the time.

As a queen consort, Balthild's influence extended beyond her royal duties. Following the death of her husband, she took on the role of regent during the minority of her son, Chlothar III. This period was marked by her efforts to maintain stability and governance in the kingdom, showcasing her political acumen and dedication to her family's legacy.

Traditionally believed to be of Anglo-Saxon noble birth, Balthild's lineage may connect her to Ricberht, the last pagan king of East Anglia. However, the veracity of this claim remains uncertain. Her story intertwines with the broader narrative of the Christianization of the Frankish territories, as her husband’s reign coincided with significant religious transformations.
