Barbara Hepworth

Barbara Hepworth, born on January tenth, nineteen oh three, in Wakefield, Yorkshire, was a prominent English artist and sculptor whose work is a hallmark of Modernism, particularly in the realm of modern sculpture. She was a pivotal figure among a community of artists in St Ives during the tumultuous years of the Second World War, alongside notable contemporaries such as Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo.

Hepworth's artistic journey began with her studies at Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art in the 1920s. In nineteen twenty-five, she married fellow sculptor John Skeaping. However, her life took a transformative turn in nineteen thirty-one when she fell in love with painter Ben Nicholson, leading to her divorce from Skeaping in nineteen thirty-three. This period marked her involvement with a vibrant circle of modern artists in Hampstead, London, where she co-founded the influential art movement known as Unit One.

As the Second World War unfolded, Hepworth and Nicholson relocated to St Ives, Cornwall, where she would spend the remainder of her life. While she is best known for her sculptural works, Hepworth also created a variety of drawings, including poignant sketches of operating rooms inspired by her daughter's hospitalization in nineteen forty-four, as well as lithographs. Tragically, her life came to an end in nineteen seventy-five when she died in a fire at her studio.
