Barbara Karinska

Barbara Karinska, born on October third, eighteen eighty-six, was a pioneering costume designer whose work left an indelible mark on the world of ballet and film. Renowned for her exquisite tutu ballet costumes, she established an international standard that continues to influence costume design today.

In a remarkable career, Karinska collaborated with Dorothy Jeakins to win the Academy Award for color costume design in nineteen forty-eight for the film Joan of Arc. This was a significant milestone as it was the inaugural year that the Oscar categories for costume design were divided into color and black & white. Her talent was further recognized in nineteen fifty-two when she received a nomination for her work on the Samuel Goldwyn musical Hans Christian Andersen, featuring the beloved actor Danny Kaye.

Karinska's contributions to the art of costume design were celebrated when she became the first recipient of the Capezio Dance Award in nineteen sixty-two.
