Barbara Mikulski

Barbara Mikulski, born on July twentieth, nineteen thirty-six, is a distinguished American politician and social worker who made history as the first woman elected to the United States Senate from Maryland. Her political career spanned three decades, beginning with her election to the Baltimore City Council in nineteen seventy-one, following a notable address on the ethnic movement in America.

From nineteen seventy-seven to two thousand seventeen, Mikulski served in the United States House of Representatives and then transitioned to the Senate, where she held office from nineteen eighty-seven until her retirement in two thousand seventeen. Throughout her tenure, she became the third-longest-serving female senator and the longest-serving senator in Maryland's history.

During her time in the Senate, Mikulski chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee from two thousand twelve until two thousand fifteen, marking a significant achievement as the first woman and first Marylander to hold this influential position. She also contributed to the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence, showcasing her commitment to various critical issues.

In March two thousand fifteen, Mikulski announced her decision to retire after five terms, choosing not to seek reelection in two thousand sixteen. Following her retirement, she joined Johns Hopkins University as a professor of public policy and advisor to University President Ronald J.
