Barlaam of Seminara

Barlaam of Seminara, born in the year one thousand two hundred ninety, was a prominent figure in the intellectual landscape of the fourteenth century. A Basilian monk and a scholar hailing from southern Italy, he made significant contributions as a mathematician, philosopher, and theologian. His work as an essayist and diplomat further showcased his diverse talents and commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.

Throughout his life, Barlaam was deeply engaged in the theological debates of his time. He is perhaps best known for his opposition to Gregorios Palamas, who defended the mystical practice of Hesychasm within the Eastern Orthodox Church. Barlaam's accusations of heresy against Palamas sparked a series of significant ecclesiastical confrontations.

Three Eastern Orthodox synods ultimately ruled in favor of Palamas, affirming the legitimacy of Hesychasm. These councils, held in June and August of one thousand three hundred forty-one and again in one thousand three hundred fifty-one at Blachernae, underscored the theological tensions of the era and Barlaam's contentious role within them.
