Bartholomaeus Anglicus

Bartholomaeus Anglicus, also known as Bartholomew the Englishman, was a prominent figure in the early thirteenth century, born around twelve hundred and three. A member of the Franciscan order, he made significant contributions to the intellectual landscape of his time as a university teacher and writer.

His most notable work, the compendium De proprietatibus rerum or 'On the Properties of Things,' was completed circa twelve forty. This pioneering text served as an early forerunner of the encyclopedia and became a widely referenced source throughout the Middle Ages, showcasing his extensive knowledge and scholarly prowess.

In addition to his literary achievements, Bartholomaeus held esteemed positions within the church, including an appointment as Bishop of Łuków in present-day Poland. However, it is important to note that he was never consecrated to this role, which adds an intriguing layer to his ecclesiastical career.
