Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg

Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg, born on July tenth, sixteen eighty-two, was a pioneering German Lutheran missionary who made significant contributions to the spread of Christianity in India. He is recognized as the first Pietist missionary to the region, driven by a deep commitment to his faith and a desire to share it with others.

In seventeen oh six, Ziegenbalg co-founded the Danish-Halle Mission in Tranquebar, now known as Tharangambadi in Tamil Nadu, alongside Heinrich Plütschau. This mission marked a pivotal moment in the history of Protestant missions in India, as it laid the groundwork for future missionary efforts in the country.

One of Ziegenbalg's most notable achievements was his work in translating the New Testament into Tamil, making it accessible to the local population for the first time. His efforts not only facilitated the spread of Christian teachings but also contributed to the promotion of Tamil literature and education.

Additionally, Ziegenbalg introduced the printing press to Protestant mission work in India, revolutionizing the way religious texts were disseminated.
