He began his career at FC Emmen in the Eerste Divisie, where he showcased his potential before moving to the Eredivisie to play for Heracles Almelo and SC Heerenveen.

In two thousand twelve, Dost's remarkable performance, scoring thirty-two goals in thirty-four matches, earned him a transfer to VfL Wolfsburg. His time in Germany was marked by success, culminating in a DFB-Pokal victory. Four years later, he made a significant move to Sporting CP in the Primeira Liga, where he continued to excel.

During his inaugural season with Sporting, Dost claimed the Bola de Prata as the league's top scorer, netting thirty-four goals in thirty-one games. His tenure at the club was impressive, with a total of ninety-three goals in one hundred twenty-five appearances, alongside winning the Taça de Portugal and the Taça da Liga twice.

On the international stage, Dost represented the Netherlands at the under-20 and under-21 levels before receiving his first senior call-up in August two thousand twelve.
