Basilides

Basilides, an influential early Christian Gnostic theologian and teacher, emerged in Alexandria, Egypt, during the first half of the second century AD. Active between one hundred seventeen and one hundred sixty-one AD, he claimed to have inherited his teachings from the apostle Saint Matthias, positioning himself as a significant figure in the early Christian landscape.

His intellectual journey is marked by connections to notable figures of his time. Basilides is believed to have been a pupil of either Menander, a Simonian teacher, or Glaucias, a disciple of Peter. This rich educational background contributed to his development as a thinker and commentator on Christian texts.

Among his contributions, Basilides is credited with authoring a comprehensive commentary on the Christian Gospel, known as Exegetica, which spanned over twenty-four books. Although this work is now lost, it established him as one of the earliest Gospel commentators, a fact noted by Agrippa Castor.

Despite the passage of time, the influence of Basilides endured through his followers, known as the Basilideans. This movement persisted for at least two centuries, with Epiphanius of Salamis recognizing their presence in the Nile Delta region by the end of the fourth century. However, it is likely that the school eventually merged into the broader currents of Gnosticism by the latter half of the second century.
