Batbayan

Batbayan, a notable figure in the history of the Khazarian Bulgars, ruled from six hundred sixty-seven to six hundred ninety CE. His reign followed a tumultuous period marked by the defeat of the Bulgars and the disintegration of Old Great Bulgaria in six hundred sixty-eight CE. This era was characterized by significant political shifts and the emergence of new power dynamics in the region.

Scholarly theories suggest that Batbayan may have been synonymous with Bezmer, a name found in the Nominalia of the Bulgarian khans. This connection posits that he could have been the first son of Kubrat, a prominent leader of the Dulo clan. Following Kubrat's death in the mid-seventh century, Batbayan took on the mantle of leadership over Old Great Bulgaria, although his rule was notably brief, lasting only three years.

Kevin Alan Brook refers to him as Bayan, highlighting the variations in historical records regarding his name and legacy. After his short reign, Batbayan continued to influence the region as a subject of the Khazar Khagan, navigating the complexities of power and allegiance in a rapidly changing political landscape.
