Bautista Saavedra

Bautista Saavedra, born on August 30, 1870, was a prominent Bolivian lawyer and politician who ascended to the presidency as the 29th leader of Bolivia from 1921 to 1925. He was a key figure in the Republican Party, leading a coup d'état in 1920 that overthrew the long-standing Liberal Party regime of President José Gutiérrez Guerra. His presidency was marked by significant turmoil, as the Republican Party quickly fragmented, leading to the formation of the Partido Republicano-Genuino, which opposed Saavedra's centralized and personalist governing style.

During his tumultuous term, Saavedra resorted to extra-constitutional measures to maintain his grip on power, expelling many leaders of the Genuino party from the country. As he approached the end of his term, he faced challenges in securing a successor who would align with his interests. His initial choice, Gabino Villanueva, proved to be too independent, prompting Saavedra to annul the 1925 elections on a technicality, which incited widespread protests and ultimately led to his resignation.

Following his resignation, Felipe Segundo Guzmán, the President of the Senate and a known ally of Saavedra, took over and called for elections in 1926. Saavedra's quest for a compliant successor continued, and he found a suitable candidate in Hernando Siles, who ran alongside Saavedra's brother, Abdón Saavedra, as Vice President. However, Siles eventually grew weary of Saavedra's interference and exiled him and his brother.

Despite his exile, Saavedra remained an influential political figure until his death on May 1, 1939, in Chile. His legacy endures in Bolivia, notably through the Bautista Saavedra Province, named in his honor, with Charazani as its capital.
