Begum Hazrat Mahal

Begum Hazrat Mahal, born around 1820, was a prominent figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, known for her fierce resistance against British colonial rule. As the second wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, she became the regent of Awadh during a tumultuous period in Indian history.

Following the exile of her husband to Calcutta, Begum Hazrat Mahal took a bold step by declaring her son, Prince Birjis Qadr, as the Wali, or ruler, of Awadh. She assumed the role of regent, navigating the complexities of governance during her son's minority. Her leadership was marked by determination and a commitment to the cause of independence.

Despite her efforts, her reign was short-lived, and she was ultimately compelled to abandon her position. In her quest for safety, she fled through Hallaur and eventually sought asylum in Nepal, where she lived until her death on the seventh of April in 1879.

Begum Hazrat Mahal's legacy endures as she is celebrated as a heroine in post-colonial India, symbolizing the spirit of resistance and the fight for freedom against oppression.
