Begum Samru

Begum Samru, born in 1753, emerged as a formidable political figure in 18th-century India, ruling the small principality of Sardhana, located near Meerut. Her rise to power was marked by her unique position as the head of a professionally trained mercenary army, a legacy inherited from her European husband, Walter Reinhardt Sombre. This army was a diverse mix of both Europeans and Indians, showcasing her ability to unite different cultures under her command.

Notably, Begum Samru is recognized as the only Catholic ruler in Northern India during her time, a distinction that highlights her unique role in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim region. Her reign spanned both the 18th and 19th centuries, during which she navigated the complexities of governance and military leadership with remarkable skill.

Upon her death, Begum Samru left behind an immense fortune, assessed at approximately fifty-five point five million gold marks in nineteen twenty-three and eighteen billion deutsch marks in nineteen fifty-three. This wealth has been the subject of ongoing disputes, with her inheritance still contested to this day. An organization known as 'Reinhards Erbengemeinschaft' continues to work towards resolving the intricate issues surrounding her legacy.
