Béhanzin, born on September seventh, eighteen forty-four, was a prominent monarch of Dahomey, which is present-day Republic of Benin. Upon ascending to the throne in January eighteen ninety, following the tragic suicide of his father, Glele, he adopted the name Béhanzin, marking a significant transition in his royal identity.
His reign, which lasted until eighteen ninety-four, was characterized by his fierce resistance against French colonization. Béhanzin emerged as Dahomey's last independent ruler, navigating the complexities of traditional power structures while leading his people during the tumultuous Dahomey Wars.
Despite his valiant efforts, Béhanzin faced defeat in the Second Franco-Dahomean War, which ultimately led to his exile in Martinique. His legacy remains a testament to the struggle for sovereignty and the fight against colonial forces.
