Bei Dao

Bei Dao, born Zhao Zhenkai on August second, nineteen forty-nine, in Beijing, is a distinguished Chinese-American writer and poet. He is celebrated as one of the most prominent poets of his generation, often considered a contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. His literary contributions extend beyond poetry to include short fiction, essays, and a memoir, showcasing his versatility as a writer.

In his youth, Bei Dao was involved with the Red Guards, but his disillusionment with the Cultural Revolution led him to participate in the Tiananmen Incident of nineteen seventy-six. He co-founded the influential literary journal Jintian (Today), which was subsequently banned in China. His poetry and activism inspired the protests at Tiananmen Square in nineteen eighty-nine, resulting in his banishment from China and a period of exile in the West.

During his time abroad, Bei Dao lived and taught in various countries before settling in the United States. Although he has been permitted to return to mainland China since two thousand six, he has only made brief visits. In two thousand seven, he joined the faculty of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and in two thousand nine, he became a naturalized American citizen.
