Beginning his directorial journey with the film Family Nest in nineteen seventy-nine, Tarr initially engaged in what he termed 'social cinema,' focusing on the everyday lives of ordinary people. His subsequent works, such as Almanac of Fall in nineteen eighty-four and Damnation in nineteen eighty-eight, showcased his mastery of controlled camera movement and deep emotional resonance. However, it was his influential film Sátántangó, released in nineteen ninety-four, that solidified his status as a founding figure of the slow cinema genre, frequently cited in scholarly discussions of the greatest films ever made.

After competing at the Cannes Film Festival in two thousand seven with The Man from London, Tarr released the critically acclaimed The Turin Horse in two thousand eleven. Following this, he announced his retirement from feature-length film direction. In February two thousand twelve, he relocated to Sarajevo, where he established the international film school film.factory in two thousand thirteen, which has gained recognition for its innovative and open study format.

In his later years, Tarr expanded his artistic exploration beyond traditional film, creating installations and performance art. Notable projects include the exhibition Till the End of the World at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam in two thousand seventeen and the site-specific project Missing People in two thousand nineteen, which involved collaboration with two hundred fifty homeless individuals in Vienna. Throughout his career, Tarr collaborated closely with his life partner, Ágnes Hranitzky, as well as notable figures such as László Krasznahorkai and Mihály Víg. In January two thousand twenty-five, he married Amila Ramović, a curator and musicologist from Sarajevo, further intertwining his personal and professional life.
