Ben Nelson, born on May seventeenth, nineteen forty-one, is a prominent American politician, attorney, and businessman. He served as a United States senator from Nebraska from two thousand one to two thousand thirteen, representing the Democratic Party. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, Nelson was the thirty-seventh governor of Nebraska, holding office from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-nine.
Before entering the political arena, Nelson had a successful career as an insurance executive. His political journey began in nineteen ninety when he narrowly defeated the incumbent Republican governor, Kay Orr. His popularity surged in nineteen ninety-four when he was reelected by a significant margin.
In nineteen ninety-six, Nelson sought an open U.S. Senate seat but faced an unexpected defeat by Republican Chuck Hagel. However, he made a comeback in two thousand, winning Nebraska's other Senate seat, and was reelected in two thousand six. He chose not to run for a third term in two thousand twelve, paving the way for Republican Deb Fischer to succeed him.
During his time in the Senate, Nelson was known for being the most conservative Democrat, often breaking ranks with his party on key votes. As of two thousand twenty-six, he remains the last Democrat to have won or held statewide office in Nebraska.
