Ben Ray Luján, born on June seventh, nineteen seventy-two, is a prominent American politician who has made significant contributions to New Mexico's political landscape. Since January third, twenty twenty-one, he has served as the junior United States senator from New Mexico, following a successful tenure as the U.S. representative for the state's third congressional district from two thousand nine to twenty twenty-one.
Before his time in Congress, Luján was a member of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission from two thousand five to two thousand eight, where he also held the position of chairman. His leadership skills were further recognized when he was appointed chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in two thousand fourteen, making history as the first Hispanic to serve in this role. Under his guidance, the Democrats regained a House majority in the twenty eighteen elections.
As a self-described progressive Democrat, Luján has been a strong advocate for various issues, reflecting the values of his constituents. He served as assistant speaker from two thousand nineteen to twenty twenty-one, becoming the highest-ranking Hispanic in Congress during that time. Alongside Senator Martin Heinrich, he is recognized as a co-dean of New Mexico's congressional delegation.
In April of two thousand nineteen, Luján announced his candidacy for the United States Senate seat being vacated by two-term Democratic incumbent Tom Udall. He successfully defeated Republican Mark Ronchetti in the general election held on November third, twenty twenty, marking a new chapter in his political career.
