His journey into music began in Okinawa, where he was inspired by the legendary Johnny Cash on television. After relocating to Washington, he immersed himself in the local music scene, playing in various punk-rock bands before joining Soundgarden in nineteen ninety.

During his tenure with Soundgarden, Shepherd was instrumental in the band's musical evolution, contributing significantly to their songwriting and sound. His creativity extended beyond the band, as he formed a side project called Hater in nineteen ninety-three alongside fellow musicians Matt Cameron and John McBain. Despite the band's breakup in nineteen ninety-seven, Shepherd's passion for music remained unwavering.

Following Soundgarden's disbandment, Shepherd faced personal challenges, including struggles with addiction. However, he continued to perform with various bands until Soundgarden reunited in two thousand ten, a collaboration that lasted until the tragic passing of lead singer Chris Cornell in two thousand seventeen. In two thousand thirteen, he released a solo album titled In Deep Owl, showcasing his artistic versatility.
