Benito Armando Archundia, born on March twenty-first, nineteen sixty-six, is a distinguished Mexican former football referee, lawyer, and economist. Known in Mexico as Armando Archundia, he is recognized in FIFA records as Benito Archundia. His journey as a professional referee began in nineteen eighty-five, and he has held FIFA referee status since nineteen ninety-three.
Archundia made his mark on the international stage with his first fixture as a FIFA referee during the nineteen ninety-four match between the United States and Greece. He holds the remarkable distinction of being the all-time leader in appearances at the FIFA World Cup, having officiated eight matches, a record he shares with Joël Quiniou. Additionally, he is one of the few referees to have overseen five matches in a single World Cup, a feat achieved alongside Horacio Elizondo and Ravshan Irmatov.
His impressive career includes supervising the final of the FIFA Club World Cup on two occasions, in two thousand five and two thousand nine, and serving as the fourth official during the final of the FIFA World Youth Championship in two thousand five in the Netherlands. Initially planning to retire after the two thousand ten FIFA World Cup, Archundia chose to extend his career for at least another year, marking a memorable moment by officiating the grand opening of the Estadio Omnilife, featuring a match between Guadalajara and Manchester United.
