Benjamin N. Cardozo

Benjamin N. Cardozo, born on May twenty-fourth, eighteen seventy, was a prominent American lawyer and jurist whose career spanned several decades. He is best known for his tenure on the New York Court of Appeals from nineteen fourteen to nineteen thirty-two, and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from nineteen thirty-two until his passing in nineteen thirty-eight. His contributions to American common law in the twentieth century are widely recognized, alongside his distinctive writing style and philosophical insights.

Raised in New York City, Cardozo pursued his legal education at Columbia Law School, passing the bar in eighteen ninety-one. His judicial career began with an election to the New York Supreme Court in nineteen thirteen, followed by his appointment to the New York Court of Appeals the next year. In nineteen twenty-six, he ascended to the role of chief judge, where he authored influential majority opinions, including the landmark case Palsgraf v. Long Island Railroad Co.

In nineteen thirty-two, President Herbert Hoover appointed Cardozo to the U.S. Supreme Court, filling the vacancy left by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. During his time on the Court, he became a key member of the liberal bloc of justices known as the Three Musketeers. Cardozo's judicial legacy includes writing the majority opinion in significant cases such as Nixon v. Condon in nineteen thirty-two and Steward Machine Co. v. Davis in nineteen thirty-seven.
