Benjamin Savšek

Benjamin Savšek, born on March 24, 1987, is a distinguished Slovenian slalom canoeist who has made a significant mark in the C1 discipline since his international debut in 2002. With an impressive collection of accolades, including an Olympic gold medal, two individual world titles, and four European titles, he stands out as one of the most accomplished C1 paddlers of his generation.

Throughout his career, Savšek has showcased his talent at four Olympic Games. He first competed in the C1 event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, finishing in eighth place. His journey continued at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where he improved his performance to sixth place. The pinnacle of his Olympic achievements came at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he secured a gold medal with a flawless run in the final. Most recently, he participated in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, finishing eleventh in the C1 event and twelfth in kayak cross.

In addition to his Olympic success, Savšek has excelled at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, amassing ten medals, including five individual medals. His gold victories in the C1 event came in 2017 in Pau and again in 2023 in London. He also earned two silver medals in 2014 and 2015, along with a bronze in 2013. His contributions to the Slovenian team have resulted in five additional medals in team events, including a gold in 2022.

Savšek's prowess extends to the European Canoe Slalom Championships, where he has won fourteen medals, comprising eight golds, two silvers, and four bronzes. Notably, six of these medals are from individual events, showcasing his exceptional skill and consistency.

In the World Cup circuit, Savšek has achieved five victories and nineteen podium finishes as of 2023. Although he has yet to claim the overall title, he has been a formidable competitor, finishing as runner-up on four occasions. His remarkable consistency is evident, as he has ranked in the top ten of the overall standings every year from 2009 to 2023, with the exception of the 2020 season, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Savšek was also recognized as the year-end World No. 1 in the C1 event in 2015 and 2022.
