Benjani Mwaruwari

Benjani Mwaruwari, born on 13 August 1978, is a distinguished former professional footballer and coach from Zimbabwe, renowned for his role as a striker. His football journey began with Jomo Cosmos, where he showcased his talent before making a significant move to Europe in 2001, joining the Swiss club Grasshopper Club Zürich.

In 2002, Benjani transitioned to Auxerre, further establishing his presence in European football. His career took a notable turn in 2006 when he signed with Portsmouth in the Premier League. Over the years, he played for several clubs in England's top flight, including Manchester City, Sunderland, and Blackburn Rovers, before returning to Portsmouth in 2011. His final playing years were spent in South Africa with Chippa United and Bidvest Wits.

On the international stage, Benjani represented the Zimbabwe national team from 1999 to 2010, earning thirty-one caps and participating in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations. Following his retirement from professional play, he took on the role of assistant coach for the national team, contributing his experience and knowledge to the next generation of players.

In addition to his coaching duties, Benjani has been involved with the Plymouth Argyle Academy as part of the Premier League player-to-coach initiative, helping to nurture young talent. As of February 2026, he is the head coach of the Zimbabwean club Highlanders, continuing to make an impact in the world of football.
